OTLEY Town Council is supporting an English Civil War reenactment weekend to the tune of £1,000.

The event, which will include a recreated battle featuring pikes, muskets and cannons, takes place in Wharfemeadows Park on Saturday, July 2 and Sunday, July 3.

The council's Policy and Resources Committee approved a £1,000 funding application from organisers Otley Pub Club when it met on Monday, June 13.

Councillor Paul Carter (Lib Dem, West Chevin), Chairman of the Trade and Tourism Committee, said afterwards: "We applaud the initiative of Otley Pub Club in bringing the English Civil War Society to Otley for what promises to be a great weekend for the town.

"This will bring a new dimension to our already varied events and festivals programme, and draw effectively on our historical connections with the Civil War.

"We hope to see many visitors over that weekend."
