A DAY of fun-focused sporting activities for all ages will be held in Otley next weekend.

Sport Chevin Family Activity Day will allow visitors to try everything from boxing skills to a children's fun run, free of charge, on June 5.

Running from noon to 5pm in Wharfemeadows Park, the event has been organised to raise awareness of Sport Chevin's bid to get a £5 million multi-sports centre built near the park.

Other attractions will include a children's bicycle course, a 5km timed run, football, hockey and rugby activities, table tennis and a variety of athletic disciplines.

A range of earlier cycle rides have also been lined up, and will start at 9am from Otley Buttercross in the Market Square.

The day, which is being sponsored by Lunds of Otley and supported by Chevin Physio and Catapult Films, will also feature a tombola and a 'battle of the bands', with groups from Prince Henry's Grammar School.

Food and drink – including a Wharfebank Brewery bar – will also be available.

Sport Chevin steering group chairman, Tony Walker, said: "We plan to have a lot of fun and raise some funds but also, crucially, we need awareness of what we are doing to attract potential donors and ensure the political parties understand what the people want!"
