MEMBERS of Ben Rhydding Croquet Club are back in the swing after being hit by the Boxing Day floods.

The riverside clubhouse and lawns were badly damaged in the flooding but now, following repairs, the season has started and mallets are out for club days from Monday to Wednesday at Ben Rhydding Sports Club in Coutances Way.

The club is also hosting a six-week coaching course for Ilkley U3A’s newly-formed croquet group, with sessions on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings throughout May headed by leading player, Penny Clark. As well as having a go on the lawns, the new recruits are also learning rules and tactics.

The club is keen to welcome new members of all ages and abilities to have a go at 'running those hoops'.

Unlike in other sports, men and women play together and against each other in singles and doubles.

Club chairman, Ken Clark, said: “Croquet is a great game, which is played by people of all ages.

"We pride ourselves on being a very friendly and social club but play competitive croquet via internal competitions, league and friendly matches against other clubs. Why not try it out and take advantage of our free taster sessions?”

The season starts in April and runs until early autumn, depending on the weather. The club also plays popular Golf Croquet, a social form of the game, and tuition is available in the traditional Association technique.
