A SEARCH is on for a new District Commissioner to play a central role in the leadership and future development of scouting in Wharfedale.

West Yorkshire County Scouts is currently appealing for potential candidates to come forward as selection process gets underway.

The District Commissioner, supported by the District Executive, provides valuable support for the smooth operation of scouting in Wharfedale.

The movement says the role is a real opportunity for a volunteer to take the lead and make a huge difference in enabling the local scouting provision, and is a great opportunity to work in partnership with the local authorities and other organisations to shape Scouting in the valley.

The role was previously held by local resident, Roger Bannister , who has now retired, and West Yorkshire County Commissioner, Mark Stageman, is currently serving as Acting District Commissioner for Wharfedale.

Mr Stageman said: "I am sure that many people in Wharfedale will know that our district has a wonderful Scouting heritage. It is reflected in both our traditions, such as the annual Torch Race, and our day-to-day Scouting, that provides safe and adventurous activities for young people on a regular basis.

"When coupled with our excellent facilities at the Wharfedale Scout Sailing Centre and Curly Hill Scout Campsite, the Wharfedale Scouting family has much to celebrate. With nearly 1,000 members, we can be rightly proud of where it has been and where it is going.

"From working in the District over the past 18 months, I know there are many talented and committed individuals who have the skills to take the District forward to ensure it has a strong future. The District Commissioner, as our lead volunteer, has the perfect opportunity to shape the Wharfedale Scouting journey."

He is keen to let as many potential candidates as possible know about the selection process.

"As we all know, our doors are always open to new volunteers, whatever their talents, life skills or experience might be," Mr Stageman added.

It is possible for the District Commissioner role to be shared amongst a number of people to fit with existing personal commitments.

The closing date for nominations is Friday February 12.

Once the initial nomination stage is completed, potential candidates will have the opportunity to meet Mr Stageman informally to discuss the role in more detail, before the interview stage.

The aim is to complete the recruitment process by February 28 and announce the name of a new District Commissioner for Wharfedale in early March.
