OTLEY Fire Station has bid a fond farewell to two firefighters with a combined service of nearly 70 years.

Patrick Steval has been providing 120 hours a week on-call cover for the town for 32 years, since he joined the service in October, 1983.

Fellow firefighter Steve Watson has been filling the same role for even longer, 37 years, after joining in July, 1978 when he was just 18.

Until his retirement, Mr Watson was the station's longest serving retained member.

Both men received presentation fire axes, bought by crew members past and present, at a retirement presentation held at the station.

They also received certificates of service from Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Steve Beckley.

Otley Fire Station Watch Commander, Martin Bleasdale, said: "These two firefighters have provided 120 hours per week, on-call cover.

"This required that for the 30-plus years they have served they had to remain within one mile of Otley station for 120 hours per week.

"I would personally like to thank them for their hard work and dedication to West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service, and to the local community.

"The commitment they have shown, with a combined service of almost 70 years, is a huge credit to them and their supporting families.

"I wish them a long, healthy and happy retirement."

lA taster event for anyone interested in becoming an on-call firefighter will be held at Otley Fire Station this weekend.

The 'try before you apply' session, for prospective Otley or Ilkley station recruits, takes place from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday, and will let attendees try basic training exercises and talk to firefighters.
