MENSTON and Burley-in-Wharfedale MP Philip Davies says he will oppose British military action against Islamic State in Syria if a strong enough case isn't made.

He was speaking ahead of Prime Minister David Cameron's address to the Commons today about the Government's strategy for dealing with the terrorist group.

The PM has made it clear he backs UK action against IS in Syria, which has previously been rejected.

"When this was last considered by the Commons, I voted against action and I still believe that was the right decision," said Mr Davies.

"If we had gone ahead with military action at that time, we would have been on the same side as Islamic State trying to remove President Assad. Action to remove Assad would lead to a much wider conflict, given Russia's support for him.

"If we can unite with other countries against Islamic State, that would be very sensible – going beyond that would be unacceptable to me.

"I will consider any Government proposals regarding intervention in Syria and listen carefully to the debate. However, I am prepared to vote this down if I believe the case has not been made."

Keighley and Ilkley Tory MP Kris Hopkins said that following the Paris terrorist atrocity, there was now a renewed case for the UK to act against IS – or ISIL – in Syria.

"Our servicemen and women are already playing a crucial role in the fight against ISIL – conducting more than 350 airstrikes in Iraq, training local forces and providing about a third of total surveillance flights," he added.

"However, ISIL has its headquarters in Syria and we need to take the fight to them wherever they are."
