TWO Ilkley children performed piano at the Penistone Music Festival on Saturday, September 26 and were awarded four trophies and two medallions between them.

Tabitha Wood, aged 11 and now attending Bradford Grammar School wowed everyone with her performance of Am Abend, showing good lyrical lines and winning the under 15 Horace Belcher Memorial Trophy.

Callum Whitton, aged nine and from Ashlands Primary School, came first in the under 11 class with his confident performance of the jazzy piece Warm Up which he played from memory.

The under 13s class saw them go head to head performing Pink Lady, with Tabitha winning first prize and Callum second.

Everyone had to wait until the end of the morning to hear that Callum had won the Doris Wilson Cup awarded to a competitor who shows real promise, musical ability, sensitivity and total involvement. “You clearly enjoy your music and listen well to make only the sounds you want to,” said Steven Roberts, the festival adjudicator.

The festival now in its 47th year saw 31 piano performances in six categories.

“I am very proud of what my pupils have achieved,” said their Ilkley teacher Evelyn van Terheyden.
