CHILDREN at a Guiseley primary school have collected cuddly toys and money for young refugees.

Pupils at St Oswald’s C of E Primary School have donated more than 100 toys to Project Paddington, which was set up by a group of Sheffield mums in response to the refugee crisis. The campaign encouraged youngsters to donate their teddies to refugee children and it attracted thousands of supporters within days.

The Guiseley youngsters have also raised more than £900 in aid of Tearfund, a charity which works with refugee families.

St Oswald's headteacher Rupert Madeley said: "This is a superb effort for a very worthy cause. I am very proud of the compassion and generosity shown by our whole school family."

Project Paddington was set up after photographs were published of Aylan Kurdi drowned on a Turkish beach. Children were asked to give teddies with welcome messages attached for youngsters who had fled the war in Syria.
