STEETON singers have been awake with the lark and asleep with the owls thanks to recent concerts.

Steeton Male Voice Choir members arrived home in the early hours after singing during the Sue Ryder Proms at Bolton Abbey last month.

Then they woke up early another day for an 8.30am appearance on Nick Ahad’s BBC Radio Leeds programme to perform five songs.

Radio Leeds invited the choir after hearing that traditional Welsh male voice choirs were experiencing a drop in membership following the closure of coal mines.

Choir spokesman Eric Parker said: “Our treasurer John Dowlan wrote to say how Steeton was recruiting steadily and the choir has a healthy membership of 80-plus men.

“He also said that we sing a piece called the Colliers Requiem which describes the closure of the last mines in the North East coal fields and this is relevant today in Yorkshire.”

The choir sang Colliers Requiem during the regular programme, and Nick interviewed baritone John Hirst about it.

Steeton Male Voice Choir will perform its annual concert at the King’s Hall, Ilkley, on October 10 with guests the City Of Bradford Brass Band. Call 01274 598221 or e-mail tickets@steetonmvc.co.uk to buy tickets.
