MORE Speed Indication Devices are to be used around Otley and Yeadon to encourage drivers to slow down.

The move is being driven by ward councillors who have secured funding to install SIDs on local speeding blackspots.

Residents had flagged up concerns about dangerous driving in several areas, especially along Bradford Road, Otley and Cemetery Road, Yeadon.

In response Councillors Sandy Lay, Ryk Downes and Colin Campbell (all Lib Dem, Otley & Yeadon) are to use their MICE (Members Improvements in the Community) funds to pay for the equipment.

Coun Lay said: "These roads are both known speeding hotspots in their areas thanks to their long, straight stretches.

"Often drivers are unaware that they are going faster than the speed limit, but the limits are crucial given the residential areas they go through.

"Hopefully, seeing their speed - which is measured and displayed by the SID as they approach - will provide a visual motivation to slow down."

Coun Downes added: "As councillors, one of the biggest complaints we receive from residents involves speeding traffic and dangerous driving.

"One thing we can do is to show drivers their speed.

"If this doesn’t work, we may have to look for police help in enforcing it."

The devices are portable and will also be used at other spots around the ward in response to residents' requests.
