IT WAS a case of 'break a leg' for gala queen Charley Holmes on her big day... literally!

Charley, 14, suffered the injury just days before she was due to take centre-stage at Horsforth Gala. But she was determined to go ahead despite undergoing surgery the day before.

Former gala queens rallied round to make sure the teenager could appear as planned on Saturday, in a specially-decorated wheelchair.

Event organiser, Horsforth councillor Dawn Collins, said: "The gala queen broke her leg on the Thursday at sports day so it was wonderful she managed to get here.

"It just wouldn’t have been the same without our gala queen.

"Last year’s queen came up with the wheelchair and the previous year’s father put on the board to help keep her leg up."

Thousands of people turned out for the annual event in Hall Park and the fancy dress prize went to children from Brownberrie Lane Pre-School, who were dressed as Thunderbirds.

Coun Collins said: "It was absolutely wonderful and the children put in a lot of really good effort for their fancy dress in the parade.

"It is a really good event that helps to bring the community together."

Meanwhile, hundreds flocked to Guiseley Carnival on Sunday helping to raise £1,500 on the day towards the senior citizens' annual outing, which will take place on August 2 with St Anne's the destination.

The event took place in the Station Inn car park for the first time, and organisers say it was so successful they now hope to use the same venue for future carnivals.

Chairman, Candy Gable, said: "It seemed to work very well and it looks like that is going to be our permanent place. It all went very smoothly."

She said about 100 people had taken part in the parade and the carnival queen had 12 attendants. The parade was headed by Lawnswood air cadets, and the event included entertainment by majorettes and bands, as well as stalls.

Guiseley and District Lions raised £170, which included a donation from a raffle held by Nuffield Health at the carnival. Proceeds go to the senior citizens' trip and the Lions are rounding up their donation to £500.

Candy added: "Thanks to everyone for supporting the carnival at our new home, the Station pub. Tony did a great job of organising everything. Thanks also to the carnival queen, her lovely attendants and to everyone who came along. I hope they all had a great time and look forward to seeing them again next year."
