OTLEY police sergeant Mark Czternastek had to put his plans to cycle from Otley to Paris on hold this year when family commitments intervened.
Instead he decided to do the equivalent of the 500-mile ride by running and cycling locally during an eight-week period to raise money for Otley charity Autism First.
Autism First in Westgate provides essential support services to local community members with autism spectrum conditions and additional support needs. Mark, whose partner Katie works for the charity, said: “My understanding of autism and special needs were limited until Katie started working for Autism First, but the more I learned the more I became attached to the service.
"It’s a fantastic cause to raise money for.”
He is keen to try to promote community relationships with local causes as part of the Neighbourhood Policing Team.
“It gives a really positive message to our community, showing the police’s passion for getting involved in local causes and the importance of forming these close relationships” he said.
The challenge has raised more than £500 for Autism First. Call 01943 850106 to make a donation.
