Otley Courthouse is set to host a Wild West themed family fun day to celebrate a production based on the real life story of Annie Oakley.

The fun day will take place on Saturday, April 25 to celebrate Little Sure Shot, the acclaimed new production by Leeds-based West Yorkshire Playhouse which is coming on tour to the Courthouse.

The day will start with a craft workshop from 12 noon to 2pm, followed by Campfire Songs and Stories with Verity Kirk (who plays the lead role in Little Sure Shot) and the rest of the cast.

The play, which starts at 3pm, is based on the story of Annie Oakley, which Irving Berlin first made famous in the musical Annie Get Your Gun.

The new play, with music by Lucy Rivers, brings the incredible tale vividly to life for all the family.

At seven Annie taught herself how to shoot, at 16 she met the love of her life - in a shooting contest of course - and at 21 she was the most famous female sharpshooter in the west.

It is told through death-defying shoot-outs, live music - country and western, blues and ballads, and more than a little theatrical magic.

Annie Oakley was a renowned markswoman and star who worked for years with Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

Born Phoebe Ann Moses (or Mosey) on August 13, 1860, in Darke County, Ohio, the woman who would be known as Annie Oakley developed her superb marksmanship abilities as a teen, earning enough to pay off the mortgage for her mother’s home.

She married fellow marksman Frank Butler in 1876 and would later become a star attraction for Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show for years, renowned for unparalleled shooting tricks.

Annie met Native American leader Sitting Bull in 1884, and he bestowed upon her the additional name Little Sure Shot.

A revered global figure, Oakley retired in 1913 and died in Ohio on November 3, 1926.

Group tickets (for four people) for the whole day are on sale now for £30. Prices for individual events are: craft workshop £4 per person, songs and stories £1 per person, and Little Sure Shot £8 per person.

For ages seven plus.
