Aireborough Gilbert and Sullivan Society – The Sorcerer, Yeadon Town Hall

A LOCAL Gilbert and Sullivan Society are this week presenting one of the duo’s lesser-known operas. And if you would appreciate a light, colourful, beautifully-dressed show with, as usual, wonderful singing by cast and chorus, do go and see The Sorcerer.

Andy Lunn director and musical director Maureen Earl have again given their hard-working singing society a great production.

The set and lighting were excellent, its costumes of the twenties period looked amazing and special mention must be given to society members Janice Summers and Jane Clough, also Ian Stead.

The libretto, I admit, is rather confusing and also steers away from the political wit usually associated with these operas. It is based on the theme of a magic love potion that results in everyone falling in love with the wrong partner, causing obvious mayhem and the family sorcerer is called in.

There are quite a few new faces in the principal line up this year and in particular I enjoyed the singing of leading lady Elaine Richmond playing opposite her real life husband Paul Richmond, a stalwart of the society who gives a confident and enthusiastic performance as Alexis.

Two delightful performances came from Martin Campey and Joan Tattersall. Margaret Barnes, secretary of the society was the prime Mrs Patlett and together with Gillian Fawcett, as daughter Constance, they both contributed to some excellent singing.

The vicar was well played by Rodney Roberts, notary was Michael Fawcett.

Andrew Baxter revels in the show’s title role of the Sorcerer, flamboyant and effective in his velvet jacket and colourful cravat he sails through the show and sings with ease.

Costumes were so well thought out and gave much to the characterisation of different roles. Also the ladies looked very elegant, all wearing beautiful hats.

Musically the show is delightful, the harmonies and company singing intricate and evocative. A super society in full voice.

Next year they are to give The Gondoliers, a hugely popular Gilbert and Sullivan opera.

The Sorcerer's final performance is tonight (Saturday) at 7.30pm.
