THE suggested creation of a one-way street in Guiseley has proved immensely controversial, provoking an outpouring of opposition.

And in this instance the public have proved what a dramatic impact they can have on council policy.

Officials were left in absolutely no doubt about the views of local people when the trial scheme for Victoria Road was suggested as part of a package of pedestrian improvements - and they reacted appropriately by withdrawing the plan just days before it was due to be put in force.

The feeling against the one-way scheme was so strong that one local councillor reported receiving more letters and e-mails on that one issue than on any other.

The moral of this particular story is that people should become involved in how their communities are run, and if they disagree with a proposal they should make their opposition clear.

Local communities do have a voice and they should make sure they use it for the common good.

At the same time officials do need to listen to the people on the ground, who understand first hand how changes will affect their area.
