THE SCHEME to replace Otley’s Maypole is progressing and has been causing some mirth online.

This photograph of a traffic cone resting on top of the historic feature’s base, on Manchester Square in the town sparked a few jokes on social network, Twitter.

One poster, ‏@Cormsbadger, quipped: “The new #otley maypole is a little shorter than expected.”

The previous Maypole was removed by Leeds City Council in June last year after a section of it was found to be dangerously rotten.

Work on replacing the base and preparing the site for a new 75ft long pole, which has been made by a specialist yacht mast supplier, began in early December, 2014.

The city council has said it is expecting the pole to be delivered within the next few weeks and installed early this year.
