PEAK-TIME tailbacks in Otley are “easing” following changes to an unpopular one-way system.

That is Leeds City Council’s assessment after it issued an order to reverse traffic flow along Charles Street and Walkergate.

The change was made on December 5, in response to complaints that the original one-way scheme was causing congestion and rat-running.

Reversing the direction caused its own problems, with the police called in on the first day to try to manage the ensuing confusion.

Leeds now believes things are improving – but says it is also prepared to make further changes if necessary.

In a response to a query from Councillor Barry Anderson, a senior highways officer said: “There are some complaints regarding queuing on Pool Road, but the generalised peak-period grid-lock on the south side of the town has eased.”

Residents insist they are still having to deal with dangerous, rat-running by motorists looking to avoid queues.
