AN ADVERT that retells the famous story of the Christmas Truce has won praise from a Royal British Legion volunteer.

Sally Thompson was so impressed by the Sainsbury’s advert that she spent £150 on commemorative chocolate bars, which were commissioned by the supermarket chain to mark the centenary of the First World War.

She has included a £1 bar with each of the festive cards she has sent to family, friends and members of the RBL. Sainsbury’s have said all profits from the chocolate bars will go to RBL funds.

Sally, who bought all her cards from the Poppy online shop, said the sweet treat had been well-received.

“People have been delighted to get these bars of chocolate through the post with the cards,” she said. “Some people have put pictures of them onto my Facebook page.”

Now she is planning to send her last commemorative chocolate bar to the Queen.

The Christmas Truce was a series of unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front during Christmas 1914, when warring soldiers stepped out of their trenches, exchanged gifts, and played football.
