ILKLEY Film Society presents its annual two-for-the-price-of-one double bill at Ilkley Playhouse on Sunday.

First, at 6pm, is the Oscar-winning documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, which turns the spotlight on the true stories of the backing singers behind some of the popular music legends of our time.

Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger and Bruce Springsteen, among others, are interviewed, but the real stars of the film are singers like Darlene Love who sang on countless hit records dating from the Crystals to U2.

At 8pm, after a break for refreshments, comes the wonderful Nebraska (in gleaming black-and-white). Hollywood veteran Bruce Dern won the Best Actor prize at Cannes for his portrayal of Woody, a cantankerous and confused old man who is convinced that a million-dollar sweepstake prize is waiting for him to collect in Lincoln, Nebraska.

When it becomes clear Woody will try to walk the 500 miles from his home if necessary, his son agrees to drive him to Lincoln and put an end to his obsession.

The result is both a richly comic road-movie and a moving portrayal of an attempt to heal family divisions before it is too late.

A single ticket gives admission to both films.

Guest tickets for non-members of the film society cost £4 (£2 for students) and can be reserved by calling Richard Fort on 01535 653471.
