HEALTH experts are urging people with respiratory conditions in Wharfedale to stay safe as temperatures fall.

The local NHS clinical commissioning group (CCG) is warning respiratory sufferers to stay well this winter as they anticipate an annual spike in hospital admissions for people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Dr Colin Renwick, clinical chairman of Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven CCG, said: “Asthma sufferers are particularly vulnerable as the cold weather and viral infections such as flu can lead to patients needing more care and support than usual and often being admitted to hospital.”

Airedale, Wharfedale and Craven CCG says if people do get sick they need to get the right treatment from the service that can help best.

Simple steps to keep well include not going out in cold weather as a drop in temperature can cause a flare-up, getting a flu jab and, if it has not been offered, contacting the GP or practice nurse.

Get the pneumonia vaccine if offered and seek expert health advice straight away either from a pharmacist, GP or by ringing NHS 111.
