A group which provides a vital lifeline to disabled people has marked its tenth anniversary with help from its local MP.

Stuart Andrew paid a visit to Yeadon-based Disability Recreation Education Advisory Meeting (DREAM) to listen to the special needs of the members and celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the groups’ formation.

DREAM was set up in 2004 and has evolved into a vital lifeline for the most vulnerable in society by providing a much needed resource for the community, tackling social isolation and giving members the change to have a say over planning and other local issues.

Mr Andrew, whose Pudsey constituency covers Horsforth and Aireborough said: "This group is open to people aged between 18-65 living with any disability. To be still running strong after 10 years is a testament to the character of volunteers, especially Brenda Taylor, who has been at the forefront of this project for a decade.

"With such vast experiences, DREAM ensures that the wider community is aware of the needs of the most vulnerable and by educating us all about the difficulties the members face in everyday life, we can work to ensure that action is taken to ease the burden.

"Most recently, I have been discussing with local transport providers the need for Automatic Voice Annunciation Systems on public transport to assist the visually impaired. This is just one of the many improvements we need to take to enable the most independent lifestyle for the disabled.

"I would recommend anybody wanting to learn more about how to help to get in touch with DREAM, as they offer vital support."

The group meets every Monday at 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm at St Johns Church, Yeadon, and is open to carers and volunteers.

The group was formed a decade ago by Yeadon woman Brenda Taylor who found herself experiencing social isolation and a lack of opportunities following a hospital visit. The group is user led, but carers and volunteers are welcome to attend.

Areas covered by DREAM include Yeadon, Otley, Menston, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Rawdon, Guiseley, Horsforth and Ilkley.
