HUNDREDS of villagers turned out to celebrate the opening of the rebuilt Menston Club yesterday.

Look North presenter Charlotte Leeming was there to do the honours as crowds descended on the two-storey club in Farnley Lane to enjoy the occasion and have a good look round.

Four years ago the old club was like a basic scout hut with a dwindling membership of just 45 struggling to make ends meet, until a deal was struck with CFK Developers to build luxury new homes on the club' s field and in turn construct a brand new village facility.

Club committee member Andrew Clegg said: "We've had a fantastic turnout, about 250 people we reckon. The youngest was three-months old and the oldest was 85."

Special entertainment was put on for children while adults took the opportunity to catch up on local news. The new social facility is non profit-making so all the profits made here go straight back into the club.

"We're sponsoring two under 18s junior football clubs in the village and have been chosen by the Paul Hunter Foundation to run snooker coaching for seven to 14-year-old disadvantaged able-bodied and disabled youngsters," added Mr Clegg, who was one of the villagers behind the re-build project.
