TWO young apprentices from Aireborough have been nominated for a Student of the Year award.

Jamie Acs and David Strong, who work for Airedale International Air Conditioning in Rawdon, will head to London later this month for the RAC Cooling Industry awards.

Jamie, a member of the firm's service and spares division, recently achieved a BSc honours degree in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineering - becoming the first Airedale apprentice to ever do so.

Test engineer David, meanwhile, recently qualified with a foundation degree in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineering and also holds a string of vocational NVQ and BTEC qualifications along with certificates in a range of practical skills including brazing and electrics.

The pair both attend the Grimsby Institute of Further and Higher Education on a day release basis, which involves a 180 mile round trip from Leeds, and are among ten students that have been nominated for this year’s awards.

The winners will be announced on September 24.

Airedale, which currently employs 12 apprentices, enjoyed previous success when apprentice Danny Carter who won ‘Engineering Advanced Modern Apprentice of the Year’ with Leeds City College in 2011.

Held in association with the Institute of Refrigeration, the RAC awards aim to recognise and celebrate the achievements of the best up-and-coming engineers in the industry.
