ABOUT 600 people attended Bolton Abbey's annual fete on Monday.

And, despite the rain, organisers think they have raised almost as much as last year's event which was held in glorious sunshine.

"Our theory is that people stayed under cover and spent money," said local rector, the Rev Simon Cowling.

He estimated that about £5,000 had been raised, which would go towards the upkeep of the priory church.

Attractions included riding an "impossible" bike, coconut shy, stalls, tombola, children's races and a display of vintage cars.

"Considering the weather, it went very well. It was a happy day," added Mr Cowling.
