Leeds has launched a 'well done in your exams' campaign to congratulate young people on their achievements.

The city council is putting 'well done' banners around the city to coincide with A level results day and to stay in place until after GCSE results day through until the end of August.

The campaign also aims to help young people and their parents to find information about possible next steps, particularly those who may not have got the results they expected.

Councillor Judith Blake, executive board member responsible for children’s services, said: "We want to ensure our young people know that Leeds is proud of them and here to support them as they make important choices about their future."

Early signs on A level results day showed a high level of achievement across the city's schools.

Indications from around 88 per cent of schools and academies showed that 83 per cent of students passed three or more A levels or equivalent qualifications.

The early results also showed that the average grade achieved by students in Leeds was equivalent to a ‘C’.

Councillor Judith Blake, executive board member responsible for children’s services, said: "I would like congratulate everyone on their achievements which demonstrate their hard work, effort and determination, as well as the high quality of teaching in our schools and colleges.

"Our ambition to be a child friendly city means making sure that all of our children and young people are given the best possible chance of getting the qualifications and skills they need to succeed in the years ahead.”

Nigel Richardson, director of children’s services said: "Once again we are seeing some excellent results across the city. Our young people are leaving school and college with essential skills and qualifications, which will help them to achieve their full potential in life.

"Schools, colleges, parents and carers all play a huge part in young people’s exam successes and they deserve recognition for their support and efforts over the last two years."
