WHEN you set off on a road to achieve something you never quite know where it’s going to lead.
For Angus Roberts the Residential Letting specialists in Ilkley, the Tour de France seemed like a great opportunity to do something that could provide a little more to some less fortunate than those living in the many villages that ‘Le Tour’ would visit.
So they decided to try to raise money for a Bradford based charity, One In A Million (OIAM), who give hope and opportunities to disadvantaged children from some of the poorest estates in Bradford.
One In A Million, co-founded nine years ago by former Bradford City AFC player and assistant manager Wayne Jacobs, provide community based sports, arts and enterprise programmes to children and young people, who live in disadvantaged areas of Bradford.
They invest hope into their lives to help change the negative statistics that hover over their lives, so that they can thrive socially, educationally and in their well being. The charity helps over 700 children every week and relies on the support of local businesses and the general public who want to make a difference.
Angus Roberts' goal was to raise sufficient money for one child, but in the end achieved, enough for three children to benefit from their programme.
They raised the money through the Angus Roberts ‘Bikethon’, which saw staff seeing how far they could cycle in a working day. The bike was ridden in turn by the team, made up of David, Leigh Carr, Emily Thwaites, Jayne Burdon and Mark Robinson along with Wayne and Craig from OIAM, on a bike kindly loaned to them for the day by Ilkley Cycles.
On Friday, July 4 they ‘Rode the extra Mile for OIAM’ and managed to raise over £2,000, enough to sponsor not one but three children! And with only sore legs to suffer for it!
Director of Angus Roberts, David Waterhouse said after the event: "We are frankly humbled by the generosity, kindness and support that we have been shown by our landlords, contractors and friends.
"We have managed to achieve a target that we never dared hope was possible! And for the Angus Roberts team we had fun and enjoyed an amazing team building day!"
Charity co-founder Wayne Jacobs who also joined the bikeathon said: "It was a real pleasure to spend the day with the Angus Roberts team, who generously gave up their time and definitely rode the extra mile to support our work with disadvantaged young people.
"They have a great team with big hearts and to achieve three times their original goal is simply outstanding. They are One In A Million!”
