A school near Leeds officially launched its very own cycle track yesterday, Thursday, with its very own Grand Depart and a very special guest in the form of the Deputy Prime Minister made a surprise, guest appearance.

Five local primary schools attended the event and took part in time trials at Ireland Wood Primary School in Cookridge.

Teacher Jen Lansdowne said: "Fantastic support was given by the local high school, whose sport ambassadors marshalled the route.

"David Stone, Paralympian gold medallist and local MP Greg Mulholland cut the ribbon to start the celebrations.

"The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, made a special appearance and loved talking to the children during the races. Keith Senior of Leeds Rhinos also attended to hand out medals to the winning athletes.

"All four guests of honour were treated to a spectacular performance of the official Tour de Yorkshire song ‘The Road’ where the whole school sang and signed.

"What a great way to make the start of the Grand Depart in Yorkshire!"
