Cyclists have raised more than £8,000 for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance after riding from Yarnbury in Horsforth to its namesake in the Dales.

Last year Yarnbury Rugby Club raised more than £7,000 for the Callum Hall Trust Fund by cycling to the same destination. And they decided to throw open the challenge again this year to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

A total of 68 riders took part in this year's event. They braved heavy rain to embark on the ride, and had help from ten support staff.

The route from Yarnbury Rugby Club took in Bramhope, Arthington, Otley, Askwith, Ilkley, Bolton Abbey, Appletreewick, Kilnsey Cragg and Yarnbury Grassington.

Adam Stephenson, who planned the ride, said the weather improved on Sunday and the first part of the ride took in some stunning countryside as well as

gruelling climbs through Silsden, and Ilkley.

He added: "The enthusiasm of Yarnbury members who are not built for cycling never fails to surprise me. This year we have raised over £8,000 for YAA a charity close to Yarnbury and the local community.

"Thanks goes to everybody who took part in what is become an annual event in the Horsforth Club calendar."

Last year around 30 members of the rugby club cycled the route to raise funds for Callum Hall, who was left paralysed from the chest down after stepping on a sea urchin, but who is determined to walk again.

The Rugby club took its name from the village in 1896 after a short social tour. Yarnbury was the name of the Hamlet just outside of Grassington where the players were entertained after a game against the local side.
