A month long campaign to help sick children has raised more than £10,000.

The May'ke campaign culminated in a free 'Celebration of Yorkshire' event in Millenium Square on May 31.

The campaign, which was launched by Horsforth schoolgirl 14-year-old Bethany Hare, has raised money for children with chronic, terminal or life threatening illnesses. The money will go towards the goal of building a purpose-built Smile Cottage, a holiday respite home in Yorkshire, where families can spend quality time together when they are faced with the news that their child has a very short life expectancy

Bethany's mum Yvonne said: "The event went really well. There was some amazing talent on the stage and a lovely atmosphere. We are delighted that the first ever May'ke campaign received donations of over £10,000. Beth is hoping, with one year to plan it, that next year will be bigger and better than ever and supported by a lot more of the Yorkshire community. "

She added: "Bethany was contacted too by a young lady who has been in the LGI for 13 months and whose hospital room looks on to Millenium Square. The message she sent us was very moving and even if we had not raised a penny from May'ke then this lady's message certainly made all Bethany's and all the volunteers hard work very worthwhile."

In her message the girl, who is not being named by the charity, said: "Just wanted to say I thought you put on an amazing event yesterday and well done."

The event include the final for the Voice of Yorkshire competition, which was won by Sophie Norris, who said: "I am really pleased that i won this competition its was very unexpected and I am proud to have been chosen as the Voice of Yorkshire. Thank you for this opportunity. I can't wait to get in the studio as part of my prize."

Bethany's next event is The Great Gatsby themed charity ball on October 4 at Headingley Stadium. Tickets are £ 45 each or £ 400 for a table of ten from bethanyssmile@virginmedia.com.
