The priorities for policing and community safety in West Yorkshire for the next 12 months have been revealed.

Improving road safety and understanding the growing problem of cyber crime are new top priorities in the refreshed Police and Crime Plan for 2013-2018, just released.

Also in the refreshed plan are new commitments around crime prevention and reducing reoffending and the impact that welfare reforms may have on crime and community safety in West Yorkshire.

Many priorities remain the same such as reducing burglary, safeguarding people against serious and violent crime, supporting victims and witnesses and better tackling anti-social behaviour and the causes and consequences of crime such as drug and alcohol misuse.

More is also being done to tackle issues that blight lives in communities including individuals and gangs involved in serious and organised crime, including child sexual exploitation and doing more work to recover ill-gotten gains from criminals.

Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Burns Williamson said: “The plan sets out a strategic vision for policing and community safety across West Yorkshire, working more closely together to prevent and tackle crime in our county.

“It is strongly influenced by what people have told me through my ‘Listening to You First’ consultation and when I have been out and about talking to people in their communities about the issues that people care about where they live.

“It has been produced in partnership with local partners including West Yorkshire Police and continues to have at the heart of the plan the shared vision of working together to make sure all our communities are safer and feel safer.

“Priorities such as reducing burglary and safeguarding our young people against child sexual exploitation remain in the plan, but I also recognise we need to tackle emerging threats such as cyber crime and to highlight the importance of road safety for communities.

“Time and time again people tell me that road safety is a big problem where they live and dealing with the issues requires a partnership approach, providing local solutions to local problems.”
