High Royds Memorial Chapel to open

Wharfedale Observer: High Royds Memorial Chapel High Royds Memorial Chapel

A restored chapel at High Royds Memorial Garden will be open twice a month over the summer as part of activities planned this year by supporters.

The Friends of High Royds Memorial Garden, Menston, plan to open the chapel on Buckle Lane from 2pm to 4pm on the second and fourth Saturday of the month, from May to September, as a trial run.

The chapel has always been opened on request, but the Friends were asked if it could also be open for people to pop in.

The restored chapel and garden commemorates nearly 3,000 people who died at the former Menston psychiatric hospital.

The Friends say the memorial garden and chapel continue to flourish with the help of willing volunteers, and a full report will be given at the annual general meeting, on Wednesday.

The annual general meeting will take place at Menston Methodist Church, at 7.30pm, followed by a talk by former senior nursing officer, Tom Booth, entitled 40 Years At High Royds Hospital.

Students of Dixon Academy in Bradford have written and produced a DVD film, with professional assistance, based on High Royds Memorial Garden and Chapel. When finished, it is hoped this will be shown at schools throughout the Bradford district.

Contact the secretary, Quentin McKenzie, on (01943) 876625 or e-mail mackenzieq@btinternet.com to contact the Friends.
