Otley Brass Band concert for Katie to thank charity
11:00am Friday 11th April 2014 in News
Otley Brass Band will play a fundraising concert this summer to thank a cancer charity for helping one of its younger players.
Thirteen-year-old Katie MacGregor, who plays for the group’s feeder band Wharfe Brass, was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in February, 2011.
The Ilkley Grammar School pupil, who is now doing well and playing with the band again, received lots of support from Candlelighters during her long stay in hospital.
So Otley Brass Band, together with Wharfe Brass and training band Stepping Stones, decided to hold Katie’s Concert at St Margaret’s Church, Ilkley, in June to give something back.
Katie’s mum Anne, who is also an Otley Brass member, said: “Katie spent six months in and out of hospital on potent chemotherapy.
“During her stay she was kept entertained by numerous toys and games and play assistants either in the dedicated playroom or in her room, when she was in isolation.
“This was all provided by Candlelighters, who also fund research into her condition.”
The concert takes place at 7pm on Saturday, June 14, and is free to enter with all donations gratefully received.
The band is giving all of the money raised to the charity so is seeking sponsorship to cover the cost of hiring the church and printing the programmes. Anyone who can help should send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or call Anne Ridgway on 07976 672131.
