Ben Rhydding Community Fete is getting on its bike this summer with additional attractions on a Tour de France theme.

The ninth annual fete will take place on the former Ilkley Middle School field, off Valley Drive and Wheatley Lane, on Saturday, June 21.

This year however, coming just a couple of weeks before the Yorkshire Grand Depart of the Tour de France, organisers are referring to it as La Grande Fete – and a prominent feature of the afternoon will be a free-to-enter Best Decorated Bike competition with prizes for the best three.

Organiser Karen Palframan said: “We like to offer something different each time and this year the choice of theme was clear. So we’re hoping for a really good turnout of well-dressed bikes, any type, any style, any number of wheels, for a bike parade with lots of scope for creativity and fun.

“There’ll also be bike races – but they’ll be slow ones.”

Over the years, the Fete has become a well-established annual celebration of life in the community with many local organisations taking part.

As usual, a two-hour entertainment programme will be on offer, with dancing displays and live music, a wide variety of stalls and games and a bouncy castle.

Ben Rhydding Croquet Club, will again organise croquet, and there will be another Rory McIlroy Washing Machine Challenge run by Ben Rhydding Golf Club.

Music this year will be provided by blues band, Dr Bob and the Bluesmakers, as well as by the regular local jazz band, Sing ‘n’ Swing and the Ben Rhydding Community Choir, while refreshments will include tea and a beer tents, as well as a barbecue and ice cream.

Admission is free.

Mrs Palframan says there is still time for any other local groups or clubs who would like to take part to apply. Contact (01943) 607334 or e-mail karen @benrhyddingfete.co.uk for more information.
