A college director took on a new role last week – when he became a campus's newest apprentice.

Executive director for commercial development at Leeds City College Brian Archer spent a day shadowing an apprentice at its Park Lane Campus to mark National Apprenticeship Week.

The college is one of the largest single providers of apprenticeships in the UK, offering more than 30 different qualifications across all kinds of fields.

Mr Archer shadowed Tawanda Mukombiwa in his role with the student support team at the campus and gained hands-on experience of dealing with all kinds of enquiries.

Tawanda, who is studying a Level 3 NVQ in Customer Service, also learned about Mr Archer's role.

He attended senior management meetings at the Horsforth campus and found out more about the director’s work developing business strategies and commercial links between the college and its partners.

He said: “I really enjoyed my time with Brian at the Horsforth campus. It was really different to the work I do. It was really interesting to learn more about a new side of college I didn’t even realise existed.”

Mr Archer said: “This provided a great opportunity to hear first-hand from our students about their experience of the college and gave me some insight into how we can improve and strengthen our apprenticeship offer.”
