An ‘extreme’ cycle ride and car wash will raise money for a trip to help Aids orphans in South Africa.

A team of 17 people from Horsforth are hoping to cycle a total of 1,000 miles in a day to raise funds for their visit to The Valley of a Thousand Hills. This weekend they will take it in turns to cycle on four bikes placed on Turbos – turning their hands to washing cars and serving cakes in between.

The team will travel out to South Africa to give help to a charity which supports a community decimated by the AIDS epidemic.

It will be the third time in four years that a Horsforth group has visited to work with the charity Sethani, whose focus is to support children who have been orphaned.

Team leader Duncan Stow said: “It was lovely going back last time because the children and the community remembered us. They opened up more, and invited us more into their lives and what amazed us is that they remembered all the songs we had sung with them on our previous trip.”

This summer the team will be doing a mixture of practical work, providing playground facilities, fixing orphans’ homes and running children’s holiday activities.

The car wash, cafe and extreme cycle ride will take place at Cragg Hill Baptist Church this Saturday. The public are welcome to attend the event. The cafe and car wash will takes place from 10am to noon and 1pm to 3pm. Cycling will be from 8.30am to 8.30pm.
