A councillor has called for action to improve safety on Otley's busier roads.

Town councillor Carl Morris (Lab, Manor), Labour’s candidate for the Otley & Yeadon ward in this year’s Leeds City Council elections, would like to see the local authority take on two new schemes.

The first would introduce a new pedestrian crossing on Burras Lane. Coun Morris says there is currently no crossing point along this entire stretch of road, making it dangerous for pedestrians to cross to Waitrose and the bus stop.

He also believes more 30mph signs are needed along the A6038 Bradford Road, because “drivers are simply not obeying the new 30mph speed limit and this is partly due to insufficient signage”.

Coun Morris added: “Through Otley Town Council we’ve helped fund new 20mph speed limits and these will make a difference when they are introduced later this year.

“But we also need additional measures on some of the busier roads in Otley, especially a pedestrian crossing on Burras Lane.

“I’ve already contacted Leeds about additional traffic measures in Otley and will continue to work with them on this issue.

“While they don’t have very much money, I would suggest that in the future the city council could look at funding new traffic measures instead of unnecessary CCTV cameras all over the town centre.”

More than 100 residential roads in Otley, south of the river, are due to become 20mph zones this year.
