I am acutely aware that 2013 has been another tough year for many people as the country gradually digs itself out of the huge economic and financial hole we were in.

Unfortunately, there are no painless ways to get ourselves out of such a mess and I have no doubt that 2014 will again be a very difficult year for everyone.

Even after taking many difficult decisions, the Government is still borrowing around £110bn a year, although that is much better than the £158bn a year borrowing that this Government inherited from its predecessor.

On a more positive note unemployment has come down considerably, both locally and nationally, over the past year, and I very much hope that trend continues throughout 2014.

The improved employment numbers are not just statistics; they are a personal triumph for every individual who gets a job and their families. We should never forget the personal impact on the people who feature in all Government statistics.

It is a tremendous honour to represent the Shipley constituency and again in 2014 I will continue to do all I can to hold the Government to account and speak out on those issues that most affect and concern my constituents. I will also continue to strive to give my constituents the best possible service.

At this time we should also remember our armed forces who are away from their families at Christmas serving our country abroad, and hope that all of them return home safely.

I wish all readers of the Ilkley Gazette and Wharfedale & Aireborough Observer a merry christmas and a very happy new year.
