ILKLEY FLOWER CLUB: The club was reminded that autumn is just around the corner as our demonstrator‘s theme was Autumn Splendour at the September meeting.

Jan Faulkner, of Middlesbrough, is a freelance florist, NAFAS demonstrator and teacher. Her enthusiasm and experience of working with flowers is enormous and she had many helpful hints.

The beautifully crafted arrangements included orchids, anthuriums, gerbera, sunflowers, roses and chrysanthemums.

The next meeting will be held on Monday, October 14, at the Clarke Foley Centre, at 7.30pm, when Kathleen Williams, of Oldham, will give a demonstration entitled Brief Encounters.

Choir to lead concert at Ilkley parish church

Five centuries of glorious sacred choral music will be celebrated at All Saints Parish Church in Ilkley this Saturday.

Chamber choir St Peter’s Singers, from Leeds, will perform music from the British and Continental traditions spanning five centuries, and including a celebration of the birth centenary of Benjamin Britten (1913 -1976).

The choir will be directed by Alan Horsey, known locally as the conductor of Ilkley and Otley Choral Societies. Mr Horsey also appears regularly with the Halle, Manchester Camerata and Kirklees Baroque and is accompanist to the Bradford Festival Choral Society.

David Houlder, the Singers’ renowned organist, will be performing a number of organ solos at the concert.

St Peter’s Singers is a mixed choir of about 40 voices based in the Leeds directed by Simon Lindley.

The concert begins at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £8, with £6 concessions. Free admission will be given to students and school children.

CAMERA CLUB: Have I got Nudes for You is the forthright title of Tim Pile’s illustrated photography lecture at the club tomorrow. Tim specialises in artistic nude photography that is a little bit different. It is a great chance for members to see what they think. Visitors interested in photography can attend for just £3. But, if you are thinking of joining the club, you can come to three meetings free of charge without obligation. We meet on Fridays at 7.30pm at Church House, Church Street, Ilkley LS29 9DR. The club helps local photographers take their work to a new level and runs a varied and attractive programme of lectures between September and April. There is further information on our website.

ILKLEY ART CLUB: The club meets on Tuesday at 7.30pm at The Clarke Foley Centre, Cunliffe Road, Ilkley. This year there will be a new and exciting programme. ST MARGARET’S CHURCH: A long-time friend of the vicar, Fr Philip Gray, was quick to accept an invitation to address our parishioners on the subject of the Mission Action Plan (MAP) which has become such an important tool in the life of our parish in the past few years. Canon Sam Corley, the Precentor of Bradford Cathedral, will preach at the two main services on Sunday, September 29, and then lead our PCC as it deliberates on the next step on the parish’s spiritual road. Five questions are to be considered as all concerned ‘seek afresh God’s vision for the life of our Church and especially our missionary calling to reach out into our communities’.

BUSINESS FORUM: Last week’s meeting took place in partnership with Burley and District Chamber of Trade and was a great success. There were a number of short presentations by Dr Owen Higgs from Ilkley Dental Care, Lorna Bird from the Ilkley Art Trail and Vera Woodhead, the chair of IBF, who gave an update on the Buy Local Showcase we are arranging for November 16 at the Kings Hall. Dr Nicola Bown, a psychologist working at Leeds Business School whose specialism is Decision Making, then told us of the extensive research carried out into how people make decisions. It was a fascinating and led to a lively discussion afterwards. The chamber did us proud with a good selection of drink and excellent cheeses supplied by Jeremy Benn, of Wharfedale Fine Cheeses. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, October 9, at the Craiglands when the speaker will be Gary Lumby on Lessons learnt from the recession and the future for SMEs. All are welcome.

BAPTIST CHURCH: Sunday morning worship was led by Paul Chapman who preached on the theme ‘conversion’. The path to conversion was not through reasoning which could neither confirm nor deny the existence of God; nor through experience, for mankind’s experiences range from very good to very bad, neither denying nor confirming His existence. The only path is faith, based upon the character of Jesus Christ as the perfect image of God the Father. The lessons were read by Lex Morgan. In the evening we joined with friends from Christchurch and All Saints for the regular monthly joint service, this month at All Saints parish church. The Wednesday fellowship enjoyed a demonstration of flower arranging given by Ann Holdsworth. This Saturday there will be a ‘vintage’ afternoon tea with various stalls from 2.30pm with the proceeds in aid of causes the Church supports in Haiti. All are welcome to help this worthwhile cause.
