Wharfedale MP voices anger at care home ruling
A decision to stop new admissions to Yeadon care homes has been criticised by an MP and local ward councillors.
Leeds City Council’s Executive Board yesterday, Wednesday, ratified the decision which will allow elderly residents to stay in their homes at Manorfield House in Horsforth and Suffolk Court in Yeadon.
But neither home will accept new residents, and Suffolk Court will be turned into a specialist clinical intermediate care centre.
While the decision about Manorfield House has been broadly welcomed there is disappointment about the fate of the Yeadon care home.
Greg Mulholland, MP for Yeadon and North West Leeds, praised the activism and initiative shown by local people who put together a 1,300 signature petition. But after the decision was announced last week he said there was concern that the plan to slowly convert the facility into a specialist clinical intermediate care centre would not provide sufficient security for existing residents.
He said: “I am, and always have been, strongly opposed to the closure of Suffolk Court care home, a vital asset for older people in my constituency.
“Whilst I am relieved that Leeds City Council has decided that there will be no evictions from Suffolk Court I remain very concerned about their decision.
“After the excellent campaign by relatives, staff, friends and residents to save the care home I am disappointed they have not been listened to. Closing the care home to new admissions will reduce the quality of life for existing residents who enjoy the community atmosphere of Suffolk Court and the conversion to an intermediate care centre will mean that care provision may no longer be suitable for long term residents further down the line.
“It also concerns me that older people in my constituency who are looking to plan for their future will no longer have the option of residential care at this local, well run and successful care home, forcing them to look further afield will cause distress for both them and their families.”
