An Ilkley man is to embark on a gruelling 130-mile charity bike ride along the Yorkshire Dales Cycle Way on Saturday in support of the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Mike Simms, a technical design director at Brighouse-based Websters Interiors, will join 25 other cyclists leaving Skipton town centre to embark on the first stage of their challenge.

To coincide with Motor Neurone Disease awareness month, the journey will span two days, with a stop in Hawes, and will cover part of the planned 2014 Tour de France route.

Motor Neurone Disease is a progressive disease that attacks the motor neurones, or nerves, in the brain and spinal cord.

Around two people in 100,000 will develop the disease each year. The Motor Neurone Disease Association is the only national charity in the UK that funds and promotes research and provides support to those affected.

Mike said: “I was already aware of the illness but when two friends lost loved ones to the disease I became aware of the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the fantastic work they do.

“When I was asked by a friend to join him on the ride and he said it was to support the association I jumped at the chance.

“I really wanted to support the charity and help them to make a difference to those affect by this truly awful disease.”

The group is aiming to raise a total of £8,000 and the fundraising page can be found at: justgiving.com/Le-Tour-De-Yorkshire
