A mass kite flying event in Otley to raise awareness of global hunger had to be postponed due to bad weather.

Children from eight local schools were all set to unleash their kites as part of Oxfam's Flying the Kite for Food initiative at Wharfemeadows Park on Friday.

But the schools involved, from Otley, Bramhope and Pool-in-Wharfedale, reluctantly decided to delay the event after seeing weather forecasts predicting snow and icy temperatures.

Headteacher of Westgate Primary School, Helen Carpenter, said: “It’s very annoying but we couldn't risk trying to fly kites in the snow.”

It is now planned to fly the kites – more than 200, all made by the children themselves and bearing messages in support of the Enough Food For Everyone IF campaign – on Friday, April 19.
