BRIDGE CHURCH: Two new elders, Michael and Margaret Armitage, were elected at the Bridge Church AGM held last week and Fred Land and Colin Whitaker were re-elected. In her report the church secretary, Susan Richardson, highlighted the success stories of the year and the bringing into membership of eight new people recently. All these had been overshadowed by the tragic death of the Rev Tony Gardiner in December, a few weeks before he was due to retire in January this year. Church treasurer Andrew Howard was pleased to report that the financial target for sacrificial giving had been exceeded, thus enabling the church to cope with ever-increasing energy costs. It would be necessary to use reserves, however, to finance the cost of refurbishing the organ later this year, a sum of over £20,000 being involved. At the close of the meeting he presented Karen Gardiner with a retirement gift from the membership in the form of a cheque, as well as a painting entitled A View from the Manse from the elders. Mrs Gardiner expressed her thanks, not only for the gifts but for the love and support she had and was still receiving.
