Lady Mayoress is special guest as the stars are made to shine at Ilkley awards ceremony

Hollywood stars and big names in British music have had their turn on the red carpet at the Oscars and the Brits Awards – but in Wharfedale, it was the turn of centenarians to celebrate their achievements.

A 100-year-old woman and a 101-year-old man were among those presented with awards at a special ceremony held at a residential care home last week.

Accolades such as Most Welcoming Person and Best Hug Award were handed out at the Straven Awards Ceremony last week, held at Straven House Residential Home, Queens Road, Ilkley.

The ceremony recognised the achievements and individualities of the people who live there.

The event was part of healthcare and care home operator Bupa’s Film Festival Month, and residents spent the day having their hair and nails done in preparation.

They were excited to welcome VIP guest, Lady Mayoress of Bradford, Margaret Smith, who came to present the awards, and many of them remarked that it was such an honour to meet her.

Activities Coordinator Laura Warren said: “The residents of Straven House are an amazing group with a range of stories and histories that span (in some cases) up to 102 years.”

As the awards were presented, the look of amazement and pride that shone in the residents’ faces was heart-warming, she added.

Resident, Jean Crookes, who won the Most Welcoming Person Award, said: “I never expected to get anything like this, I am very honoured.”

Among the award winners were 100-year-old Marjorie Anson, who won the Best Quiz Answerer Award, and 101-year-old, Jack Scott, who won a Lifetime Achievement Award.

Following the presentation, residents and guests were entertained by singer and performer, Emma James, who provided a movies and musicals themed set, in keeping with the Oscars theme.

Home Manager Lorraine Tinkler said: “The whole event had a wonderfully positive feel to it, and one of the guests told me that it was very homely and welcoming here, something that I was very proud to hear.”

Resident Peggy Brownridge, who won the Best Hug Award, said: “It has been a right good night. I have really enjoyed it. We’ve had a lovely time.”

There will be another celebration on Tuesday, March 19, at 2pm for residents who are aged 100 years and over, celebrating their lives and the last 100 years.
