WOMEN’S INSTITUTE: There is a saying that there is a dancer in everyone and Ben Rhydding WI members certainly had a go at finding their inner talent at their February meeting with Rachael Keighley’s Zumba Gold session. The Latin rhythms of salsa and merengue got everyone on their feet and, amid much hilarity and varying levels of success, we mostly managed to follow the routines which Rachael demonstrated so gracefully. A circular dance to Hava Nagila and some stretching and bending exercises to music finished off the afternoon’s session and left us all feeling we had really thrown off the last of the winter cobwebs. Members are now looking forward to our spring trips to Murgatroyd’s for lunch and on to Stephen Smith’s in Otley on March 21 and to the St John’s Retail Park and on for lunch to Fodders and the farm shop on April 18. Our clubs – Scrabble, craft and chat and luncheon - are all thriving and our new flower arranging club, on March 12 for the next one, produced some lovely results from its first meeting. Looking further ahead, some of our members will be going to a Federation evening with Pam Rhodes from the BBC’s Songs of Praise on May 21 at Giggleswick School. We also hope to hold another of our very successful coffee mornings on May 18. Further details nearer the time. This month’s competition was for a fancy T-shirt and was won by Alice Selina, with Kathleen Wilkinson in second place and Margaret Willson in third. Next month’s meeting is on Thursday, March 14, at noon at Ben Rhydding Methodist Church Hall when our own Pat Gale will be talking about Birds of Wharfedale. The competition is for a photo of a bird and there will be one of our popular £1 stalls. Bring along your contributions and find something nice to take home! Visitors and prospective members at a cost of £3 are, as always, very welcome to come along and join our friendly group.
BRIDGE CLUB: Results for Monday, February 18, six tables. N/S 1 Melvin Blake and Dave Fletcher 65 per cent, 2 Judy Palmer and Fred Dunning 60 per cent; E/W 1 Len Hughes and Duncan Ault 61 per cent, 2 Judith Waterworth and Stella Read 55 per cent. The club plays on Mondays at 9.30am at the Methodist Hall. For more details, call (01943) 466605.
