WRITERS: At their latest meeting on May 7 several members were delighted to report their success in the writing classes of Wharfedale Festival of Arts 2013, always a good barometer of the local writing talent. The next meeting will be held on May 21. Meetings are held on alternate Tuesdays at Yeadon Town Hall from 7.15 to 9.30pm and take the general format of reading and discussing members’ work and completing simple writing exercises. The group has also arranged a number of writing workshops on a variety of topics. This friendly group of amateur writers welcomes new members. MERCURY MOVIE MAKERS: Wednesday evening was Transport Night and members brought films they had made of different types of transport, which proved very interesting. The earliest railway system for commerce was evidently at Middleton in Leeds and we were shown a film with diagrams and commentary which showed it operating and, of course, film footage. When electric trolley buses were phased out some years ago, a group of enthusiasts preserved examples of them at a place called Sandtoft. Here they constructed overhead wiring and got them running and they still can be seen. This film gave us a good insight into the centre near Doncaster. Our local railway enterprise covering the Keighley and Worth Valley was shown and is obviously doing a good job. It is not a far cry from trolley buses to electric trams and these were seen at Crich in Derbyshire. A natural subject for this evening was the National Railway Museum at York. Back on Track highlighted Sheffield and Manchester, both cities which now possess tramway systems. Taking to the water, one film showed various marine craft and boats and even the liner Queen Elizabeth 2. We had also a visit to racing motor cycles, then our other local asset, the steam railway at Embsay. Reach for the Sky explored all aspects of flying and some crafty computer-derived effects. Bradford Interchange showed the land clearance and then the construction of this transport facility and then its subsequent modification. WOMEN’S FORUM: Our chairman began by letting us into a bargain offer – we waited with baited breath – it was Swinsty Hall, for a snip price of only £375 million! But down to earth again she updated us for coffee and a chat. After listing the poor health of several members who were missing this morning, she then introduced our speaker for the day, Pauline Dobson, whose talk was on the fairly small charity called Mission Without Bounds. They look after orphans in the smaller states such as Albania, Ukraine, Moldova and Romania and also orphans from the Chernobyl disaster. They provide homes for these girls, mainly, who are otherwise destitute, and even continue care after they reach 18 when they would otherwise be left alone to find jobs (very difficult) and lodgings. It is a Christian organisation and Pauline found it very moving when they sang hymns together to the same tune but in at least three different languages. Next month will be our last ‘proper’ meeting before the summer. We are holding two get-togethers for coffee and a chat with stalls where you can bring unwanted items – and take them home if nobody else wanst to give a small donation for them – and an object which you would be willing to talk about for just a few minutes. These meetings will be June on 20 and August 8. Looking forward to seeing you there then, as well as at the last meeting on Thursday, May 16, at the Methodists church from 9.45am to 11.45am.

TALKING NEWSPAPER: At the annual general meeting of the Ilkley Talking Newspaper, the secretary reported another successful year. We now have fewer listeners than previous years mainly due to advances in medical science improving and rectifying loss of vision. Our treasurer reported a satisfactory financial position. We have received two legacies from previous helpers/listeners. All our reading teams, copiers, walleters, editors and technicians work extremely efficiently to produce a CD every week of the Ilkley Gazette and monthly edition of the Dalesman. FORUM 2000: The group needed 30 minutes extra on May 1 when a team of four came to re-live with them the 2012 Olympic experience and it was wonderful. Peter Smith, who was in charge of everything going on in the Leeds area, briefed the forum in February 2011 about all that Leeds stood to gain including money, new facilities and weeks of free coverage on the TV in China, Holland, America, Canada and Sweden. Now on his return, he was able to claim ‘Job done!’ Meg Morton came in her uniform as a ‘gamesmaker’ and sparkled as she described her exhilarating experiences, including the selection process, many training sessions like learning sign language and her action-packed schedule. Most important: ‘be nice and smile!’ It was a surprise to learn that no expenses were paid so fares and board and lodging came out of her own pocket. She showed photographs giving some flavour of the attractive Olympic site, particularly the gardens. Arthur Cockroft spoke of his life dedicated to his family and athletics, a lifetime crowned when he was chosen to carry an Olympic torch, which he had with him. Nick Westby, a journalist with the Yorkshire Post, spoke from the viewpoint of the sports reporter and had brought copies of his book Yorkshire’s Olympic Heroes, full of excellent photographs. It was heartening to be told that people in Yorkshire will benefit from an Olympic legacy and to bask once again in the glory of the 2012 Olympics. METHODIST CHURCH: Sunday morning's service was taken by the Rev Philip Bee and Lindsey Hurst preached in the evening. Everyone is welcome at coffee stop today between 10am and 11.30am. On Saturday, Group 13 is holding a coffee morning between 10am and noon in support of the Sylvia Wright Trust and Guiseley in Bloom. There will be a cake stall, book stall and nearly-new stall. On Sunday the Rev Keith Reed will take 9am communion and the Rev Rick Ormrod will lead the family and parade service at 10.30am. The evening service is at Burley. The Ladies’ Monday Group will enjoy a musical evening with Mr Reed at 7.45 pm. There is the usual prayer group on Tuesday at 9.30am and the Rev Neil Dixon will address Group 13 at 7.45pm. On Wednesday at 7.30pm Leslie Holmes continues with the third part of A Journey with St John.

PROBUS CLUB: Members enjoyed an entertaining and informative morning when John Gilleghan, the visiting speaker, described his personal recollections of a recent visit to New Zealand. Following a brief historical introduction and by a clever use of slides, anecdotes and even musical accompaniment he described his tour of South and North Island of New Zealand, including visits to Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland. Although essentially a coach tour, he took the opportunity to fly over Mount Cook and the Southern Alps in a helicopter. He also visited just some of the one 160 sites used in the Lord of the Rings trilogy of films. His scintillating talk left members in “Kia Ora” which we were told was Maori for good health. The president proposed the vote of thanks and reminded members that the next meeting, on Tuesday, would be an open meeting. The talk will be given by two Probus Club members, Clive Moyns and Eric Verge, on We Were There!

PRIORY CHURCH: The services on Sunday are 8am communion (said), 10.30am sung eucharist and evening prayer at 6.30pm. On the first Sunday of the month we hold our liquid family service at 9.15am. This service is aimed at youngsters and there are songs, activities and refreshments. Each Wednesday there is a communion service at 10am. All services are BCP. ST PETER’S CHURCH: It being the first Sunday of the month we held our usual half-hour family service at 10am, designed with young children particularly in mind, followed by holy communion for those who wished to stay. It is always a joy to welcome families on these occasions – some are regular attendees, others may be there to mark special occasions, such as anniversaries of baptisms, weddings and so on. The theme of the service was Jesus as the good shepherd and we his somewhat wayward sheep. Lay Reader Anne Hodgson’s talk was up to her usual, inspirationally-high standard but she was very nearly upstaged by her visual aid, Flossy, a lamb which the Fleshers, who farm on the Moorside, had lent to Anne for the morning. The children took turns to give her a bottle and after the talk Flossy was whisked away before the effects of feeding her were made manifest on the church carpet. On Monday Don Norley, another long-serving and well-loved member of the congregation, whose thoughtful and moving readings of the lessons will long be remembered, was laid to rest and on Wednesday a coach-load of the congregation visited Menwith Hill, to see just what is inside those golf balls. The visit, organised by our curate David Austin, has proved so popular that another visit for the overflow will be held in June. In addition to the normal services this week there is holy communion at 8pm this evening to mark Ascension Day and on Thursday, May 16, there is a meeting in the church hall at 8pm to consider setting up a Friends of the Church Orchard for those interested in helping in the orchard. It is intended this should be as much a community activity as a church activity and anyone interested is encouraged to attend.

Wonder Stuff's Otley gig rearranged

A show in Otley by two members of The Wonder Stuff has been re-arranged for next week. The frontman of the hit 1980s Indie outfit, Miles Hunt, and fiddle player Erica Nockalls were due to play at Korks Wine Bar on May 3. Menston Arts Club show

Otley art exhibition opens

A solo exhibition exploring the nature of reality and identity will begin in Otley this weekend. Town mayor Councillor Mary Vickers (Lib Dem, Prince Henry) will declare Behind the Veil and Into the Infinite, by John Whitehead, open at the Bono Art Gallery on Saturday. The works on display will include videos, photography and moving images - all focused on the question of how we define who we are and the nature of ultimate reality. Refreshments and snacks will be provided at the gallery, on Courthouse Street, from 7pm to 10pm.
