TV crew films budding Horsforth golf star

A golf prodigy who has been tipped to become the next Tiger Woods' is to feature in a TV documentary.

Eleven-year-old Lee Spurling, from Horsforth, has been demonstrating his skills to a camera crew from Channel Four's Cutting Edge series.

Lee and his dad Ian, who is also his coach, were filmed as they took part in their daily training routine.

Ian is so sure of his son's potential that he has placed a 1,000-1 bet with bookmakers William Hill that Lee will win a major golfing tournament by the age of 25.

And viewers will get an insight into Lee's talents when he appears in the Cutting Edge film, My Child Champion, early next year.

When he was just eight, Lee, who was already being tipped by his dad to be a golfing superstar, was named Youngster of the Year at the 12th annual Yorkshire Young Achievers Awards.

He had the perfect golf swing at the age of three, could hit a straight drive blindfolded at five and went on to take part in the grand final of the HSBC Wee Wonders tournament at St Andrews.

His father, who nominated him for the prize, said at the time: "We bought him some toy clubs when he was three and he grabbed one and hit the ball so hard it nearly went through the wall. So, I gave him a metal club and a real ball the next day and he put it through the window.

"He is a natural and I really think he will go on to become a superstar, because he's a year ahead of what Tiger Woods was achieving at this age - he went around one full course in just 89 strokes when he was still seven."

The Channel Four documentary examines whether the world's best sports players are born or made.

The one-off film looks at children in golf, tennis and go-karting.
