Weekend of violence and vandalism in Otley

POLICE are appealing for help after a weekend of violence and anti-social behaviour in Otley.

The most serious incident saw two visitors to the town - along with a passerby who came to their aid - assaulted by a group just after 1am on Sunday after leaving the Rose and Crown pub, in Bondgate.

The attack left one man with a broken jaw.

Around the same time police believe drunken revellers were to blame for leaving a trail of havoc along Crow Lane that included scratching cars and breaking their wing mirrors.

Intruders also broke into the Wharfedale & Airedale Observer's unoccupied Otley office in the Orchard Gate shopping complex in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Otley Police Sergeant Stewart Beck said inquiries into all the incidents were continuing, but appealed for the public to help.

He said: "We had a few incidents that occurred over the weekend. At the incident outside the Rose and Crown public house it appears a male and female, having left the pub and making their way home, were approached by a group, whereupon they have been set upon and assaulted.

"A passerby who has tried to intervene has also been assaulted.

"This has resulted in fairly minor injuries to the female and passerby but the male has received a broken jaw.

"We would appeal for any witnesses or anyone who has any knowledge of the incident to contact us."

One of the group suspected of carrying out the assault was a white male with dark, spiky hair who was wearing a dark green and white, hooded stripy top.

The other description police have is of a white female who had a dark bob-style haircut.

Some residents in Crow Lane, awoke on Sunday to discover their cars had been maliciously damaged.

Sgt Beck said: "What appears to have happened is that either late on Saturday or early Sunday somebody, and there may have been more than one, has walked down Crow Lane causing damage to various items car wing mirrors and so on.

"It would appear that some revellers after a night out have gone on a damage spree as they were walking home.

"We have conducted extensive house to house inquiries and been checking CCTV for possible suspects but, as yet, have drawn a blank.

"We are continuing inquiries and asking people to come forward with any names of people who might have been involved."

Sgt Beck added that PCSOs (Police Community Support Officers) had been informed of the Orchard Gate break in and asked to pay the area some extra attention.

Lead thieves recently targeted the roofs of several businesses in the centre.

Anyone with information on any of the incidents that took place over the weekend can contact Otley Police on 01274 471458 or call the Crimestoppers number, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

Time and again the same headlines are in this paper with comment by the Police.

It is time the people in Otley called the Police to account for their lack of action

On this note - I merited a visit from our local PCSO team, vai emailing them querying where they were and what they were doing all the time.

Lo & behold 2 days later they turned up at my door to tell me they were very busy, they took law breaking very seriously and would be trying their very best to sort the town's isues out. Needless to say I'm not that confident in their aspirations....

If you have the evidence, then let the police deal....Well at least give them a chance to deal.
After that it is open season on them.
