Guiseley teacher killed in skiing accident
SHOCKED pupils and staff at a Guiseley school are in mourning following the death of a teacher in a tragic skiing accident in the French Alps.
Tim Barker, a design technology teacher at Guiseley School, suffered fatal head injuries in a fall at a resort in Tignes, in the Savoie region of France.
The incident happened on the afternoon of March 27, where the father of two was thought to be enjoying an Easter break.
Reports from French newspapers said that the 56-year-old, who was a former pupil of Ilkley Grammar School, died despite receiving immediate medical care.
It is believed he had been attempting to join a track down a marked trail that narrowed by a partially ploughed path when he fell.
Medical staff were quickly called to the scene but Mr Barker failed to recover from his injuries.
A spokesman for the Leeds Coroner's Office said that an inquest into his death is expected to be opened on Monday.
Mr Barker, who lived at The Crescent, in Guiseley, leaves behind his wife of 32 years, Yvonne, 55, and two daughters, Lisa, 26, and Emma 29, who were both former students at Guiseley school.
His family were too distraught to comment.
Ten years ago Mr Barker helped his school become the first in the country to win national acclaim and a new national award for its contribution to other schools in the community.
The Technology Colleges Trust award was presented by swimmer Duncan Goodhew at the Technology Colleges Trust annual meeting in London.
The funeral will take place at St Oswald's Church, Guiseley, on Wednesday, April 16, at 1pm, followed by cremation at Rawdon.
Head teacher of Guiseley School Paul Morrissey said: "We were shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Tim Barker who was an outstanding colleague and much-valued member of our school community for 23 years.
"As an excellent design and technology teacher, and also for his inspiring role developing training opportunities for future colleagues, he will be greatly missed by staff and students alike. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this sad time."
