£1.6m plan sees Otley pub company buy ten more outlets

THE owner of an Otley-based pub company is raising a glass after more than doubling its size overnight.

The Suburban Style Bar Co Ltd, which has outlets in Otley, Horsforth and Baildon, has taken over ten new properties following the completion of a £1.6 million funding package from the Allied Irish Bank (AIB) (GB).

The company has bought eight free-of-tie freehold pubs and two, free-of-tie leaseholds, all from outside the Wharfedale and Aireborough areas (including one across the Pennines), although two are in Leeds.

With its existing brands Suburban Style Bar and Drinkers' Delight, the business now has 15 outlets with a further one in the Gateway development, in Leeds city centre, due to open later in the year.

Suburban's managing director Andy Longman, who lived above the Otley bar on Bridge Street for several years before recently moving to Menston , said: "Following a strategic review at the end of last summer it was decided that to take the company forward we needed to diversify our existing portfolio, as opposed to just relying on a single brand.

"These ten new businesses take us further into West Yorkshire as well as for the first time South Yorkshire and Greater Manchester. We have always set high standards across our Suburban Style Bar estate, and we are always looking at ways to improve ourselves, and with these acquisitions we are looking at carrying that strategy across.

"All the new sites will be keeping their existing identity, although several will receive considerable investment to enable a refurbishment programme. Overall though, they will all benefit from our increased buying power and a vastly improved product range through our well established relationships with companies such as InBev, Black Sheep Brewery and Oddbins.

"This is a very exciting time for Suburban Style Bar Co, and creating quality outlets at both ends of the market greatly enhances our standing.

"Suburban Style Bars have built up a loyal following with our clients regularly visiting our other outlets. This has been achieved through listening to what our customers want and acting where necessary, and we hope that this policy will continue with these new acquisitions."

Why oh why do they have to call it "Drinker's Delight"? It is so cheap and chavvy.
