Hundreds of children enjoy cross-country races
 |
| Children competing in the cross-country races |
This is the second season that Ilkley Harriers have co-ordinated the Wharfedale Primary Schools' Cross-Country League competition.
Eleven local primary schools competed in five individual races organised by Ghyll Royd School, Ben Rhydding School, Ashlands School, All Saints School and Ilkley Harriers.
Although there were races for year one to six at each event only the results from years 3 to 6 were used for the eight individual league competitions.
It was an amazing success with over 400 children from years 3 to 6 competing. Numbers were double that if you include all the children from the KS1 races and the additional schools that competed from outside of the league group.
There were some really close finishes not just in individual races but also in overall league positions and a lot of the top placings were still undecided going into the final event of the series so the league remained competitive right to the very end.
The first three positions in each of individual leagues were:
Year 3 Girls: 1, Jessica Burgess (Ben Rhydding);equal 2, Kate Hargreaves (Menston), Laura Harrison (Moorfield). Year 3 Boys: Equal 1, Ben Thompson (Burley Woodhead) and Charles Smith (Ghyll Royd); 3, Jake Field (Menston). Year 4 Girls: 1, Tassy Heslop (Moorfield); 2, Elizabeth Westhead (Menston); 3, Laura King (All Saints). Year 4 Boys: 1, William Tench ( Ben Rhydding); 2, Jordan Windass (Menston); 3, William Bradley (Ben Rhydding). Year 5 Girls: 1, Rose Hagan (All Saints); 2, Grace Malir (Menston); equal 3,Lucy Williamson (Ben Rhydding) and Molly Harris (All Saints). Year 5 Boys: 1, James Woodward (Westville House); 2, Thomas Kerr (All Saints); 3, Alex Henney (Burley Woodhead). Year 6 Girls: 1, Naomi Elliott (All Saints); 2, Anna Tench( Ben Rhydding); 3, Hannah Heslop (Moorfield). Year 6 Boys: 1, Harry Maslen (All Saints); 2 Elliot Dowley (Burley Woodhead); 3 George Thomas (Burley Woodhead).
Jessica Burgess and Naomi Elliott won all five of their individual races outright.
The final event was a Schools' Relay and presentation of awards organised by Ilkley Harriers at Nell Bank Outdoor Centre.
There were two relay races for teams of three runners - an U-9 event for Years 3 and 4 and an U-11 event for years 5 and 6. The relays were hectic but everyone liked the team aspect and competition and it was a fantastic way to conclude the series.
The first three team places in the U-9s were: Ben Rhydding, Menston and Burley Woodhead (all boys), Moorfield, Menston, Ben Rhydding (all girls) and Westville House, Menston and Menston (mixed team).
In the U-11s it was Sacred Heart, Burley Woodhead, Burley Woodhead (all boys), Ben Rhydding, Burley Woodhead, Westville House (all girls) and All Saints, Menston and Sacred Heart (mixed team). Many thanks to Ghyll Royd, Ben Rhydding, Ashlands and All Saints schools for organising an event on behalf of the league and to members of Ilkley Harriers for their help and support as well as Nell Bank for the use of their facilities and to Mr Boothman for the use of his field for the races.
Without such a massive number of individuals willing to volunteer their time none of this would be possible.
Organiser Shirley Wood said: "Well done to every child who competed in any of the races and to the schools for their support of the league - there is certainly a lot of enthusiasm and talent amongst the children in Wharfedale."
